What to include in a cover letter:

Begin with a professional header

include your name and contact details (town you live in, mobile number and email address will do) at the top of the letter on the right-hand side, then put the date of your application below it.

Use a personalised greeting

Start the letter with the name of the hiring manager if possible. If you can’t find this out, use the name of the company (and make sure you spell it correctly!) Use ‘Dear xx’.

A strong opening paragraph

The first paragraph of your cover letter needs to be tailored for each job application, so begin by introducing yourself, explaining which job role you’re applying for - and why - and say where you found the listing.

For example: "I am writing to express my interest in the xx position listed on xx. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to your company, xx, and am confident that my skills and experiences are perfect for this role."

The main content of your cover letter

Don’t make your cover letter too long or the hiring manager will only skim-read it. Instead, focus on just one or two paragraphs that highlight your relevant skills, relevant work experience and relevant personality traits. Show off your experience and , most importantly, ensure you relate everything to an aspect of the job description you’re applying for.

For example: "In my previous role at xx, I successfully managed/lead a project on xx, which resulted in xx and shows that I have the ability to xx. I have developed strong skills in xx, which I believe will be directly applicable to this role at your company. I am now eager to bring this expertise on xx to your team at xx."

A strong closing paragraph

In the final paragraph of a cover letter, you want to summarise your enthusiasm for the specific role and encourage the hiring manager to get back in touch with you.

For example: "I’m excited about the prospect of bringing my demonstrated skills to your company xx and the role of xx. I have attached my CV for you to review and would love the opportunity to discuss how my background and skills will be beneficial to your team at xx. Thank you for considering my application."

Sign off the letter professionally

A simple “Yours Sincerely” followed by your full name will do it.
