Proofreading and Copywriting FAQs

Below are my answers to some of the frequently asked questions about writing, editing and proofreading services:

Q - How much does a freelance writer or freelance proofreader cost?
A - The price of online content creation depends on the length of the text and the complexity of the text. I charge £49 per hour for writing and editing services and £39 per hour for proofreading services. I can either send an invoice based on the number of hours it takes me to complete a project or we can agree on an up-front project cost, whichever works best for us both. As an example, a standard blog post would cost you around £100, a press release around £50 and rewriting your website around £200. Find out more about the freelance services I offer here.

Q - How long does it take to proofread a document?
A - The time it takes to proofread depends upon the number of words involved. I have an average reading speed of around 750-1000 words per minute which is pretty fast! Of course, proofreading requires more time than simply reading through what’s on screen. When proofreading, attention to detail is vital, so my reading speed drops significantly to ensure I notice every word, meaning and punctuation mark on the page. Q - How does the proofreading process work?
A - I want to make sure the proofreading process works as smoothly and efficiently as possible for both of us. To start with, you’ll send me your text in a format that best suits you (it could be a Google Doc, a Word document, a PDF or a web link, for example). Then, I’ll either make amends directly onto the document, use tracked changes or suggest a list of edits that you might wish to amend yourself. I am thorough in my proofreading and will look at your text's spelling, grammar and readability. I’m happy to make suggestions in all of these areas and can work to your own style and preferences. I don’t make changes for the sake of it - if your writing is perfect already and there's nothing for me to correct, I’ll tell you! Find out more about my freelance proofreading service here.

Q - How long does it take to write an article?
A - The time it takes me to write online content depends on the number of words involved and how much research is required for the topic. If it’s a topic I know well or have a detailed brief for, then an average 1500-word article might take me a couple of hours. A short product description may only take 15 minutes, whilst a longer 5000-word blog entry could take a few hours. Find out more about my freelance copywriting service here.

Q - Is correct English grammar still important to people?
A - The English language is always changing and that’s what makes it so interesting. With the rise of social media and instant messaging, proper grammar often goes out the window and punctuation isn’t used at all. However, correct English grammar is vital if you want your online content to appear professional. It also helps to improve the flow, accessibility and readability of your content so, of course, I think it remains very important! Q - What does a freelance editor do?
A - As a freelance copy editor, I believe it’s essential that your online text is grammatically accurate, readable, accessible and interesting. A freelance editor can help with any sort of text, whether it’s a webpage, a blog or article, a policy document or a product description, to help ensure the copy you have is written in the best manner and tone possible. I can take existing content and re-write it to match a certain style, make it more readable or reduce the word count. I can also convert complicated ideas into more accessible formats.
