25 Common Spelling Mistakes
English is infamous for its complicated spellings and exceptions to the rules. Even if English is your native language, and you’ve diligently learnt that it’s ‘I before E except after C’, chances are you’ve made a spelling mistake at some point. Below are 25 common British English spelling mistakes that often get picked up during the proofreading process. Are you guilty of these spelling errors? Would you score full marks in a spelling test?
1 - Separate: Often written as ‘seperate’ with an E.
2 - Definitely: Rather than ‘definately’ or ‘definatly’.
3 - Occurred: Not enough Cs or Rs makes it ‘occured’ or ‘ocurred’.
4 - Embarrass: With an r missing becomes ‘embarass’.
5 - Receive: I before E except after C - often misspelled as ‘recieve’.
6 - Occasion: Another one with not enough Cs or Ss, such as ‘ocassion’.
7 - Independent: Misspelled with an A becomes ‘indepedant’.
8 - Compliment: Often written as ‘complement’ with an E, which means something else.
9 - Accommodate: Not enough Cs or Ms becomes ‘accomodate’.
10 - Misspell: Ironically, this is often misspelled as ‘mispell’.
11 - Effect: Using an A ‘affect’ in the wrong location.
12 - Necessary: Should have ‘1 Collar and 2 Sleeves’ (1 C and 2 Ss), not ‘neccessary’.
13 - Privilege: Sometimes written with a D, ‘priviledge’.
14 - Convenience: Often misspelled as ‘convinience’.
15 - License: Easy to mix up the Cs and Ss because of how it sounds, like ‘lisence’.
16 - Believe: Another I before E - not ‘beleive’.
17 - Attach - Adding an extra T often makes this ‘attatch’.
18 - Maintenance: Frequently written as ‘maintainance’, as in ‘maintain’.
19 - Judgment: This word often gets an added E - ‘judgement’.
20 - Initiative: The A is commonly missed from this word - ‘inititive’.
21 - A lot: Frequently written as one word, ‘alot’.
22 - Commitment: Too many Ts makes this ‘comittment’.
23 - Achieve: Commonly written as ‘acheive’.
24 - Argument: Adding an extra E means this is misspelled as ‘arguement’.
25 - Harassment: Adding too many Rs becomes ‘harrassment’.
